Conservation Tip: Flip the Switch for Wildlife

As late summer approaches, many birds begin their fall migration, traveling at night and navigating by the moon and stars. Bright artificial lights can confuse migrating birds, pulling them off course and increasing the risk of collisions with buildings. Nighttime lighting can also disrupt insects, bats and other nocturnal wildlife that depend on darkness to feed, navigate and move safely.

By reducing light pollution around homes, parks and neighborhoods, you can make a difference. Cornell University recommends “Lights Out For Birds,” or turning off nonessential lighting between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. during the fall migration period, which runs now through Nov. 30. Turning off lights when they aren't needed helps wildlife stay on course, supports healthier nighttime ecosystems and saves energy.

Game On: Fall Softball League Registration Is Open

Ready to get back on the field? Fall softball league registration is underway, giving teams a chance to compete, have fun and make the most of the season. With five weeks of play, doubleheaders and a fast-paced one-pitch format, there’s plenty of action ahead.

The season begins Sept. 8, and schedules will be posted on Aug. 28.

Afterschool Rec Club is a free program for students in kindergarten through eighth grade where kids can learn, make friends and have fun after the school day ends.

Afterschool Rec Club is offered at 15 community centers across Columbus.

Building for Our Future
A New Look for a Hilltop Favorite

A familiar Hilltop neighborhood park is getting a major transformation.


The redevelopment of Hauntz Park has turned the 5.6-acre park into a destination with more ways to play, explore, gather and enjoy the outdoors. This reimagined park is now home to a skate park, playground, basketball court, shelter, picnic tables, pollinator meadow, constructed wetland and a walking trail loop. A few final touches, including color coating of the basketball court, will be completed in the coming weeks.

The improvements are about more than new amenities — they create new opportunities for neighbors of all ages to spend time outside and connect with their community.

Named after Raymond Gibson Hauntz, a World War I veteran, former Columbus City Councilmember, Columbus City Schools Board of Education member and West Side grocery store owner, the park now carries his legacy into a new chapter.
