Conservation Tip: Spotted Lanternflies are in Ohio

The spotted lanternfly, an invasive insect, has been confirmed in Ohio. Early concerns suggested they might be as destructive as the emerald ash borer, but research from Penn State shows that spotted lanternflies pose very little risk to native trees [ https://www.psu.edu/news/research/story/invasive-spotted-lanternfly-may-not-damage-hardwood-trees-previously-thought?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]. Because the pest is already established in our region and evidence suggests there won't be long-term impacts to public trees, the City’s Forestry team is not treating for spotted lanternfly. 

The Ohio Department of Agriculture recommends removing grapevines and tree-of-heaven from your property if you are worried about the pest, since it primarily threatens vineyards and orchards.

Residents can still help slow the spread. If you see a spotted lanternfly, you can stomp adults to kill them, and scrape or destroy egg masses when you find them. Celebrating the Best in Columbus Boxing: Hall of Fame Showcase

Join us on Nov. 15 at Lou Berliner Athletic Complex for the annual Hall of Fame Boxing Showcase [ https://columbusrecparks.com/calendar/2025-hall-of-fame-boxing-showcase/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ], where we will recognize new inductees into the Columbus Recreation and Parks Department's Boxing Hall of Fame! Doors open at 4 p.m., and the bouts begin at 5 p.m. General admission is $10 for adults and $5 for children, and VIP tables are available for $160.

This year, we are welcoming Michael Brady and Tony Johnson, along with Lennell Walton, our 2025 Boxer of the Year. It will be an exciting evening of boxing and celebration, and we hope to see you there!

While We Renovate, Your Art Doesn’t Skip a Beat

Big things are coming to the Priscilla R. Tyson Cultural Arts Center! The building is closing temporarily for renovations, and when the doors reopen, artists will see noticeable upgrades that make it easier and more inspiring to create. These improvements will modernize studios, update equipment and make the space more comfortable and accessible for everyone who works, learns and creates there.

While construction takes place, creativity won’t slow down! Classes for Sessions 1 and 2 will continue at the Fran Ryan Center and Whetstone Community Center. You’ll need a free leisure card at both temporary spaces. WinterFest Columbus Returns With a Free Downtown Dance Party

WinterFest Columbus is back! Kick off winter with a citywide dance party at Bicentennial Park on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.! Enjoy live music from RJD2 with a full band, Wave Magnetik and Damn Girl, plus seasonal craft beers, hot cocktails and some of Columbus’ favorite food trucks.
