Conservation Tip: Why Sharing Snacks with Wildlife Isn't as Friendly as It Seems

While sharing your afternoon snack with a critter in the park might seem like a kind gesture, feeding wildlife can be harmful.

Human foods are often unhealthy for wild animals. When they indulge in our snacks, they can fill up on the wrong nutrients, neglecting their natural dietary needs for survival. This shift can disrupt their hunting, foraging or scavenging behaviors, leading them to focus on our food, which can result in illness or starvation. Also, animals accustomed to human handouts can lose their innate fear, potentially resorting to begging or even property damage in search of food. Despite their adorable demeanor, these creatures remain wild and unpredictable; if they feel threatened or frustrated, they may lash out with a bite, kick, charge or outright attack.
