*Columbus secures additional Bloomberg Foundation funding to continue Youth Climate Action Fund in 2025 and support youth-driven climate action*

(Columbus, OH) – With [ https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196(21)00278-3/fulltext?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery#sec1 ]_84 percent [ https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196(21)00278-3/fulltext?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery#sec1 ]_ of youth around the world reporting that they are worried climate change threatens people and the environment, and in support of the Columbus Climate Action Plan, Mayor Andrew J. Ginther is pleased to announce the continuation of the Youth Climate Action Fund in the City of Columbus. The fund and program is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies with a goal to activate tens of thousands of [ https://www.un.org/en/global-issues/youth?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery#:~:text=Who%20Are%20the%20Youth%3F,of%2015%20and%2024%20years. ]_young people between the ages of 15 – 24 years [ https://www.un.org/en/global-issues/youth?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery#:~:text=Who%20Are%20the%20Youth%3F,of%2015%20and%2024%20years. ]_ to design, produce, and govern urgent climate solutions in cities across the globe. As part of Round 2 of the program, the City of Columbus received $100,000 from Bloomberg Philanthropies with the majority of funds to be distributed as microgrants for youth-led climate initiatives.

Last year the program received $50,000 and made awards to 10 youth-led projects. Those projects included tree-planting, a public education event on pollution free transportation, creation of an upcycling cart and waste reduction education, a climate tech hackathon, community garden creation, invasive species removal and more. Each of these projects support and advance community goals in the Columbus Climate Action Plan and strive to impart environmental justice.

"The future of our city—and communities around the world—depends on the leadership, innovation, and passion of young people. The Youth Climate Action Fund empowers the next generation of climate leaders to drive real, community-focused solutions right here in Columbus,” said Mayor Andrew J. Ginther. “These projects demonstrate the power of youth-led action in building a more sustainable and resilient city. We remain committed to equipping young people with the tools and resources needed to combat climate change and advance environmental justice in our city."

Young residents aged 15-24 years are encouraged to visit the Sustainable Columbus webpage [ https://www.columbus.gov/Government/Mayors-Office/Sustainable-Columbus?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] to learn more about the Youth Climate Action Fund and how to submit ideas for the opportunity to receive funding. These ideas should be inspired by the Columbus Climate Action Plan and center on equity and environmental justice. Ideas may include:

* *Youth-led awareness, education, research, and development initiatives, *including: youth-led climate education programs; youth climate hackathons; youth-developed climate surveys and research; youth-informed clubs or curriculum; and youth-designed public art and awareness campaigns.
* *Youth-driven climate mitigation and adaptation projects, *including: youth-led community gardening, tree planting, reforestation, and urban farming campaigns; youth-managed recycling and waste reduction programs; youth-led clean energy and energy efficiency projects; youth-led biking, walking, and pollution free transportation programs and initiatives; and youth-produced climate resilience workshops and disaster preparedness programs.

Applications will be accepted starting Feb. 11 on a rolling basis until funds are depleted, with initial awards planned for Earth Day 2025. Proposed projects should target completion by November 2025.

“Columbus is invested in building and supporting the next generation of climate leaders. These grant funds help empower young people to lead the way and show us the changes they want to see in their community,” Sustainable Columbus Grants Coordinator Melanie Ford said. “We were all inspired by last year’s projects, and we can’t wait to see what this year’s applicants bring to the table!”
