Conservation Tip: Springtime Means Salamanders and Frogs Are on the Move
As the weather warms up, our friendly frogs and salamanders are shaking off winter and heading to their breeding grounds—vernal pools [ https://www.epa.gov/wetlands/vernal-pools?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery#:~:text=Vernal%20pools%20are%20seasonal%20depressional,of%20the%20summer%20and%20fall. ]. These temporary wetlands dry up in the summer, making it crucial for these amphibians to find them in time. On the first rainy spring nights, when temps hit the mid-40s, you might spot them laying eggs that hatch and transform before moving to land.
With a little care, we can ensure our amphibious friends thrive in our parks. Here’s how you can help:
* Stay on trails to avoid disturbing delicate habitats.
* Clean your boots before stepping near a pool—mud and debris can carry invasive species or diseases.
* Handle with care—if you must, wet your hands first to protect their sensitive skin.
* Observe, don’t collect—it's illegal to take amphibians from the wild in Ohio, and they don’t do well in captivity.

* Take your workout outside [ https://columbusrecparks.com/facilities/trails/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]: Bring your fitness routine to a local park or use the outdoor fitness equipment available in select locations.

Celebrate the Fran Ryan Center’s Inaugural Artist in Residence
Join us on Thursday, May 22, at 6 p.m. for a special performance by John Giffin, the Fran Ryan Center [ https://columbusrecparks.com/facilities/franryancenter/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]’s first Artist in Residence. A short reception will follow.
Since February, John has worked with center participants to create a dance program that will be shared with long-term care facilities across Greater Columbus. This final performance is a chance to see their creative journey come to life and celebrate the launch of the Artist-in-Residence program. Currently titled "“"Aftermaths",”" this work examines how individuals and communities respond to devastating events and regain their footing in the face of loss.
The Artist-in-Residence program provides artists with studio space, financial support and opportunities to engage with the community through their work. Come be part of this inspiring debut!
The event is free and open to the public. You can RSVP by emailing *perennialmovementgroup@gmail.com*.
