Conservation Tip: Bats, the Nighttime Pest Patrol

When you see bats swooping through the twilight, don’t panic—cheer them on! These flying bug zappers devour thousands of mosquitoes and other pests every night, keeping evenings more comfortable for all of us. Despite their spooky image, most bats are shy, gentle and vital to a healthy ecosystem.

Spotting bats this fall is a great sign that nature’s balance is thriving. However, some local species are even at risk, facing big threats like habitat loss [ https://www.nps.gov/subjects/bats/habitat-loss.htm?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] and disease. You can help bats out by skipping or reducing pesticides, hanging a bat house [ https://www.batcon.org/about-bats/bat-house-guidelines/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] and spreading the word about these hardworking, often misunderstood neighbors of the night.

Ready to show you’ve still got it? Lace up for the 2025-2026 50+ basketball league [ https://columbusrecparks.com/wellness/athletics/basketball/fiftyplus?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]! Whether you’ve got a full team or just your game face, there’s a spot for you. Individual players can hit the open gyms to practice (Oct. 12, 19 and 26 from 1-3 p.m. at Barack Community Center), and join a team before the season begins.

Registration runs Oct. 12-27, and the season begins Nov. 2. The 10-week season begins Nov. 2 and includes playoffs for qualifying teams

Poetry in Motion: Rikki Santer Joins the Fran Ryan Center as Artist in Residence

The Fran Ryan Center [ https://columbusrecparks.com/facilities/franryancenter/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] is delighted to welcome Rikki Santer as the Winter/Spring 2026 Artist in Residence. From Jan. 5 through May 2, Rikki will share her creative talents through workshops, readings and community engagement.

An award-winning poet, editor and educator, Rikki was named Ohio Poet of the Year in 2023. Her published collections include Clothesline Logic, Fishing for Rabbits and Zebra Lashes.
