Conservation Tip: Lights Out to Benefit Migrating Birds
Did you know that city lights can be harmful to migrating birds? Billions of birds migrate south overnight in the fall and north in the spring, and they get confused when they see lots of city lights. Many bird species can be thrown off of their migratory paths, which can make them exhausted while flying around, eventually causing bird fatalities.
The National Audubon Society’s Lights Out program [ https://www.audubon.org/our-work/cities-and-towns/lights-out?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] encourages organizations and individuals to turn off lights during peak migratory seasons to reduce bird fatalities. Lights Out Columbus [ https://ohiolightsout.org/cities/lights-out-columbus/?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] was established in 2012, and today, several buildings participate by pledging to reduce lighting.
You can help at home, too! As we enter the fall season, consider these tips:
* Set up lights to the automatic motion sensor setting.
* Reduce exterior decorative lighting.
* If you live in a higher-story building, turn off interior lighting.
* When you’re updating your exterior lighting, make sure you avoid over-lighting.
Together, we can help migrating birds reach their winter homes safely!
