Whetstone Prairie Prepares for Controlled Burn to Safeguard Vital Ecosystem

Prairies are crucial guardians of our natural ecosystem, offering many benefits. They provide vital habitats for pollinators and endangered wildlife, safeguard soil against erosion, facilitate nutrient cycling, uphold clean water sources, and play a pivotal role in carbon storage, aiding in the fight against climate change.

Regularly intervening in prairie ecosystems is essential to their long-term health; without intervention, prairies naturally transition to woodlands. Two methods commonly used to manage prairies include prescribed burning and controlled mowing.

In late March or early April, Whetstone Prairie is slated to undergo a controlled burn to help preserve and nurture this invaluable habitat. This controlled burning process speeds up material decomposition, replenishing the soil with crucial nutrients like nitrogen. Also, the black layer of char and ash absorbs more of the sun's light, warming the ground and helping seeds germinate. 

This critical management strategy will help ensure the long-term health of Whetstone Prairie in a way that ensures the safety of both the public and the surrounding area. Please call 614-645-3319 with questions.
