*Columbus Announces Youth Climate Action Fund Grant Recipients*
The City of Columbus is pleased to announce the selection of 10 recipients of the city’s Youth Climate Action Fund, a new microgrant program intended to empower the next generation of climate leaders. The fund is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies and enables young people ages 15-24 to design, produce and govern urgent climate solutions in cities across the globe.
Through the Columbus Climate Action Plan, Columbus is committed to combating climate change and reducing its impact on our community. A key strategy in the plan is to empower a community of climate leaders. The Youth Climate Action Fund supports that strategy and represents the first time the city has provided funding for young people to create their own climate-related projects. The city announced the program earlier this summer and put out a call for applications.
“We won’t solve the climate crisis without fresh perspectives and a new way of thinking,” said Mayor Andrew J. Ginther. “The Youth Climate Action Fund represents a unique opportunity to give young people a voice and an active role in creating the kinds of solutions they want for their future and the future of Columbus.”
The total amount awarded is nearly $50,000, with individual awards between $2,000 and $5,000. Projects range from educational events to community gardens to a climate-themed hackathon. A small team composed of city staff, volunteers from the Ohio Environmental Council’s Emerging Leaders program, and youth between the ages of 15-24 reviewed applications and made final project selections. Scoring criteria included support for goals in the Columbus Climate Action Plan and projects that centered on equity and environmental justice.
“It’s amazing to see what these young people came up with, and it’s evident that there was a real untapped desire in this community to help create change,” said Melanie Ford, Sustainable Columbus Grants Coordinator.
A full list of awarded projects can be viewed here [ https://www.columbus.gov/Government/Mayors-Office/Sustainable-Columbus/Columbus-Youth-Climate-Action?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ]. The city received nearly $80,000 in project applications and is hoping to receive another round of funding from the Bloomberg Foundation to offer the program again next year.
