New Protections for Public Trees Passes Columbus City Council

Did you know that the brand-new public tree code [ https://www.columbusufmp.org/public-tree-code-updates.html?utm=&utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] was passed by Columbus City Council this week? The public tree code protects trees growing on City-owned property, such as park trees and street trees, and it was a priority in the Urban Forestry Master Plan (UFMP). One significant improvement is that if a public tree has to be removed due to construction, stricter steps will be followed to make up for the loss of that tree, a process called “tree mitigation.” Mitigation can take the form of replanting or payment into a tree fund, which goes to planting trees across the city. A public tree will now need to be replaced with the same amount of inches of new trees, counteracting a net loss of trees. This is a huge increase in required tree plantings, and it will increase tree plantings around the City.
