*Columbus Launches Youth Climate Action Fund to Activate Young People in Driving Climate Solutions*
Columbus, OH – With [ https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196(21)00278-3/fulltext?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery#sec1 ]_84 percent [ https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanplh/article/PIIS2542-5196(21)00278-3/fulltext?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery#sec1 ]_ of youth around the world reporting that they are worried climate change threatens people and the planet, and in support of the Columbus Climate Action Plan, Mayor Andrew J. Ginther is announcing today the start of a new Youth Climate Action Fund in the City of Columbus. The fund is supported by Bloomberg Philanthropies to activate tens of thousands of [ https://www.un.org/en/global-issues/youth?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery#:~:text=Who%20Are%20the%20Youth%3F,of%2015%20and%2024%20years. ]_young people between the ages of 15 – 24 years [ https://www.un.org/en/global-issues/youth?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery#:~:text=Who%20Are%20the%20Youth%3F,of%2015%20and%2024%20years. ]_ to design, produce, and govern urgent climate solutions in cities across the globe. The City of Columbus is one of 101 cities across the globe to receive this opportunity.
As part of the program, Columbus has received $50,000 to distribute as microgrants to fund a groundswell of youth-led climate initiatives. From mobilizing tree-planting or public education campaigns, to launching recycling or waste reduction initiatives, to participating in mitigation planning or preparedness programs, efforts stemming from the new Youth Climate Action Fund will advance critical community goals in the Columbus Climate Action Plan and that impart environmental justice.
“Climate change is already impacting our community here in Columbus, and who better to provide solutions and ideas for a better community now and into the future than those who will inherit it,” said Mayor Andrew J. Ginther. “The City of Columbus knows investing in our youth is critical, and I can’t wait to see the change this opportunity will inspire.”
Young residents aged 15 - 24 years are encouraged to visit the Sustainable Columbus webpage here [ https://www.columbus.gov/Government/Mayors-Office/Sustainable-Columbus?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdelivery ] to learn more about the Youth Climate Action Fund and how to submit ideas for the opportunity to receive funding. These ideas should be inspired by the Columbus Climate Action Plan and center on equity and environmental justice. Ideas may include:
* *Youth-led awareness, education, research, and development initiatives, *including: youth-led climate education programs; youth climate hackathons; youth-developed climate surveys and research; youth-informed clubs or curriculum; and youth-designed public art and awareness campaigns.
* *Youth-driven climate mitigation and adaptation projects, *including: youth-led community gardening, tree planting, reforestation, and urban farming campaigns; youth-managed recycling and waste reduction programs; and youth-produced climate resilience workshops and disaster preparedness programs.
Applications will be accepted through early August. The City of Columbus will make awards by September of 2024, as cities that respond to the urgency of the moment and commit the initial funds quickly will receive additional funds from Bloomberg Philanthropies for more youth-driven projects over the next year.
* *“Climate change is an all-hands-on-deck challenge, and it’s critical that young people – who have the most at stake – help lead the way,” said Michael R. Bloomberg, UN Special Envoy on Climate Ambition and Solutions and 108th mayor of New York City. “This new fund will help mayors mobilize and empower tomorrow’s leaders to take action today.”
